Individual & Family Health Insurance

If you don't get coverage through an employer, you'll still need a health plan. For many people, that means buying individual health insurance. Everyone is different, so it's important to choose a health insurance plan that works for your lifestyle and your financial situation.

Individual health insurance can be purchased through the exchange, or directly from the health insurance carrier. There's an annual open enrollment window for individual coverage, which runs from November 1 to January 31. Outside of open enrollment, you need a “qualifying life event” to trigger a special enrollment period.

Medicare

Medicare Part A and Part B only covers 80% of your medical expenses, which could leave you exposed to large out of pocket expenses. A Medicare Supplement, or Medicare Advantage plans fill in the "gaps" in coverage, such as deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. To be eligible to enroll in a Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage plan, you must be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B.

The best time to buy is during your Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period. Your Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period lasts for six months. It starts on the first day of the first month in which you are:

  • Age 65 or older and
  • Enrolled in Medicare Part B

Offering the "right" health insurance plan is one of the most important decisions you can make as a small business owner – keeping employees happy and healthy benefits you in the long run.
