Maternity Coverage – Important Notice

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Important news for our Anthem Blue Cross clients in California who are on non-maternity plans! Prior to June 1st, 2010, if you became pregnant while on a plan with no maternity benefits, you would be offered their high deductible PPO Share 5000 plan. However, now that this is no longer the case, it is extremely important we evaluate your current situation to ensure coverage is in place when you need it.

Did you know that a C-section can cost around $30,000? Or that a premature baby can run up hospital bills in the $600,000 range? This only demonstrates the importance of making certain you are covered before becoming pregnant.

Anthem Blue Cross PPO Share Plan Changes

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Anthem Blue Cross has discontinued some of their PPO Share (maternity) plans in California, and although you may keep your current coverage, you may find the rates higher than you anticipated. In this case, new plans have been designed to offer comparable coverage with lower premiums. For instance, those individuals and families on the PPO Share 2500 or 1500 may want to consider moving to a less expensive plan, such as the PPO Share 3500. These plans will balance the escalating costs of maternity coverage with higher deductibles and out of pocket maximums. You will still have the comfort of knowing that your coverage is in place should you need it, and continue using your current doctors and hospitals. Also, moving to a new plan will not always require medical review, making the process even easier.

As your agent, we also suggest reviewing options for those family members who do not need maternity coverage, and consider separate plans for your family members. You’ll find that this can often reduce your overall premiums, as you are no longer paying for coverage you don’t need.

Pregnancy Options for Non-Maternity Plans

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Since many carriers are either dropping maternity from their plans, or raising the premiums sky high for maternity coverage options, what happens to a woman on a non-maternity plan if she becomes pregnant?

Depending on which insurance carrier you are with, the answer varies.

Anthem Blue Cross individual plans will allow you to switch to their PPO Share 5000 plan without having to go through medical underwriting.

On some Blue Shield plans (not all of them) you can switch to their 5000 PPO plan as well, as long as you have been on your current plan for at least 12 months

If your insurance carrier does not offer maternity benefits, you can apply with a state program (such as AIM in California), though you do have to meet certain criteria to be considered eligible

Please make sure to speak with your agent about your needs, as they will be better able to answer any questions about maternity coverage.

By talking about the options that may or may not be available to you, you’ll have the coverage in place when you really need it.
